Linguistic research, the basis of development in our field of activity

Hermeneus, a journal of multi-lingual translatology
Without the translatological and linguistic research undergone by professors in Universities all around the world during the past 80 years, linguistic service companies would certainly not achieve the level of development they have been able to reach so far.
Sometimes, these researchers – most often unknown or lesser known – also accomplish applied research and not only of basic type (as their status should impose).
Rarely, or so to speak, extremely rarely, can one find examples of applied research in translatology emanating from leaders of private companies which however clutter up (unduly) the markets of offer of translation services!
The Hermeneus Journal, of the Faculty of translation and interpretation of Soria (University of Valladolid) in Spain, constitutes the perfect example of this research activity, under the direction of Juan Miguel Zarandona. The latest delivery, presents in this issue, more than twenty articles for nearly three hundred pages, of essays well structured and brilliantly conducted by professor Rocío Anguiano who wrote

a very interesting review of a book written by Paula Quiroga : Fraseología italo-española. Aspectos de lingüística aplicada y contrastiva (Granada Lingüística, 2006).

My data is mine!
The defense of personal data on the Internet is more and more in the eye of the storm as monitoring could be abused. Sir Tim Berners-Lee*, father of the Internet and currently researcher on the semantic Internet project, has just declared that Internet users are the sole proprietors of their data and traces of their navigation on the web. Their browsing history is theirs. “These are mine and if someone wants to appropriate them, they must inform me” has he declared. Beforehand of course!

Starting 12th of March 2008, the Gazzetta dello Sport.it has a site inside its web site entirely elaborated in English for the very first time.
La Gazzetta dello Sport.it International offers multimedia content in English in relation to football, automotive sports and many other sports in which the ‘made in Italy’ is worldwide famous, by its protagonists, characters, brands : From Ferrari to Ducati, from Italian football to cycling.
« The Eurologos Milan office is working on this project since December, and after months of work, the site is at last online. We hand in translations 24 hours on 24 and 7 days a week, thanks to a global approach » Dario Bertolesi, Client Leader, declares. « We receive the articles to translate on our FTP, in XML format for the web » continues the responsible for the project, « and the translators handle them personally following a specific time shift. Restitution of files is always done via the server, where the client can recuperate the translation 2 and a half hours later »
