Saint Jerome, protective of translation
Translators' associations the world over celebrate September 30th, his feast day, by honouring his art of translating well.

Indeed, Jerome was the first person to transpose the Bible from Greek and Hebrew into Latin - the famous Vulgate.
But translators are also grateful to him for numerous teachings concerning the way to combine translation adherence and stylistic beauty. Secretary to Pope Damasus and head of the mission in ancient Gaul, Saint Jerome is the incarnation of the cosmopolitan and modern polyglot, 1,500 years before our time.
